Hurricane Katrina - part 2
Well, hurricane Ktrina has convinced me that I will never evacuate for a hurricane. The information coming out of New Orleans government is general and hysterical. The media is not timely and focuses on the sensationalistic aspects - recycling the same images for hours. The only reasonable news was from NOLA.com's breaking news.

Hurricane Reporting - New Orleans
First, let me say that I've been following Hurricane Katrina closely because Steve and I are/were planning to go to New Orleans for Labor Day weekend for Southern Decadence. We were initially interested in just knowing whether we could continue with our vacation, but soon realized that the severity of the storm could have enormous consequences for the people of New Orleans.
However, I discovered that sane, rational reporting almost disappeared - instead, all the news organizations went overboard in their predictions. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Hurricane Center (NHC) is a scientific site. The reports and advisories they issue are (usually) science-based: they forecast the storm surge for New Orleans at 6'. There was a 20% chance that the eye of the storm would pass over New Orleans or further west.
