The Ten Commandments
With all the recent hubbub, I thought I'd point out that America was not really founded on the Ten Commandments. I believe that the first Amendment actually guarantees that we can break commandments one, two, and three. Commandment four: most Americans don't even realize that the Sabbath is on Saturday, not Sunday - and it wasn't until well into the twentieth century that most Americans didn't work on Saturday. Commandment five: most Americans leave their parents as soon as possible and never return to care for them - there are certainly no laws that say we must honor our parents: in addition, we're currently having a big brou-ha over Social Security so that the government has to care for our parents via guaranteed monthly payments (how about my new proposed law that any Jew or Christian who has children is not eligible for Social Security - their children must pay for them?) Six: it's illegal to muder; however we're sending soldiers to Iraq to be killed and to kill other soldiers (as well as collateral women and children) and we have the death penalty - therefore "killing" is actually required by law. Seven: adultery? Don't make me laugh! However, the Christians are pretty much convinced that homos require a constitutional ammendment to prohibit them from being happy - how about an amendment to outlaw adultery? Eight: all the way to number eight before we actually have a law that pretty much follows the commandment - although McAuly Caulkin might disagree, since his parents stole his money, but it was legal because he was "their" minor. Number nine: let's ask Jerry Springer and all the trashy daytime talk show hosts if America has ever given false witness against their neighbor. Their certainly is no law that says we can't spread gossip and rumors about our neighbors. Number 10? America (and capitalism) are based on the guiding principal that we always want what our neighbors have: welcome to "keeping up with the Joneses" and the "rat race".

The final tally? 2 commandments implemented and one commandment half-implemented. With a record like that, I'd find it hard to say, with a straight face, that America was founded on the Ten Commandments. As a matter of fact, if I were a Jew or Christian, I'd be embarassed to have a visual display of all the failures of my religion visible all the time.

Running
On Saturday, I ran in a road race (OK, it was really just a 5K fun run) for the first time. I decided to run because of my friend Terry's success in the Marathon and the fact that she was making her husband, Clif, run in the race, too. So, I thought I'd keep him company.

misprinted type
sample graphic from web site I ran across the web site for "misprinted type"while researching some usability information for work (funny where the WWW leads us, isn't it?) I find the web site and images to be amazingly original and talented: I wish I could create something as unique.

Love Won Out
protesters
I protested today at a church that was hosting a Love Won Out conference here in Houston: that's the Christian group that thinks gays can be converted to be straights. They always forget to mention that their founder, who became straight in 1991, became gay again (after he was seen in a Washington DC gay bar.) They also don't mention the two directors of Exodus who divorced their wives and married each other.

Where's George?
I ran across this money tracking site called Where's George? The way it works is that you enter the serial numbers from the bills in your possession and see if someone else has had them. Intriguing. The weird part? Some people have entered more than 100,000 bills - I wonder how long that takes?
