05/08/2006: "Al Gore: An Inconvenient Truth"

Al Gore in a blue shirt on a blue background. My friends Clif and Terry told me about Al Gore's upcoming lecture in Houston put on by The Progressive Forum, Houston, and associated summer movie (watch the trailer.) I'm interested in what he has to say. I read State of Fear, so it's only fair that I see an alternative viewpoint.

Say, for example, you still owe $100,000 on a $150,000 loan taken out for 30 years at 6.5 percent. If you refinance the balance for another 30 years at 5.75 percent, you'd be paying $583.57 instead of $948.10 a month, a savings of $364.53. I agree with all you say. I'd be happy if the "left" would stop using Mt Kilamanjaro and the "right" would stop saying "there is no global warming". Since the consensus scientific agreement is that the world is getting warmer, the next/continued step is to fund research to determine how much warmer it will get, which should lead to the answer of why it's getting watmer and what's really causing it. Let's let the scientists find the answers, and leave politics out of it.

I watched the trailer. The problem I have is that if you are going to base an argument on science, you better not lie about what the science says or your whole argument falls down.

In the trailer, Al Gore says that the scientific "consensus" is that "We are causing global warming".

The problem is that the articles I have read say that the scientific "consensus" is that man's activities are having a "discernible effect" on global warming, but it is not conclusive that man is the exclusive cause. In my view it is possible or even likely that IF the earth is getting warming, there is something else contributing to it (like natural cycles that started and ended ice ages in the past or increased solar output) and man's contribution may be only a sliver of the whole cause.

In my view, there are several questions to ask about global warming.

1) Is the earth REALLY getting warmer? Just a few years ago there were exhibits in the Smithsonian about the global COOLING that was going on. The "scientific consesnsus" of the mid 80's was that the world was getting colder. Michael Crichton makes the case that the world may not even be getting warmer at all.

2) If you accept that the world is getting warmer, then the next question is what is causing it. It could be man, it could be nature, or it could be a combination of the two.

3) Given the causes of the warming (if any), what is the proper response? If man's contributions are slight, does it make sense to spend our resources trying to eradicate CO2 emissions? We could totally succeed and still have the 100 million refugees Al Gore talks about. If the warming is real, might it be better to look at how to react to it?

Al Gore says that if the polar ice sheets melt, the sea level will rise by 20 feet, and implies this will cause 100 million refugees. My observation is that the sea level may rise 20 feet, but by 1 millimeter at a time. There will be time to react. It is not like one day the ocean will be 20 feet higher than it has ever been before. If the global warming problem is real, I think we should consider whether the considerable resources required to address it are better served by trying to wipe out CO2 emissions which may address only part of the problem, or by preparing for the consequences which may be inevitable.

As for Mt. Kilamanjaro featured in the trailer: Any argument that says "Look how much warmer it is now than it was 30 years ago" is flawed. What I have read says that the early 70's was a very cool time historically. Maybe Mt. Kilamanjaro is not "supposed" to have much snow on it, and 30 years ago was the aberration. It is stuff like this that makes me look at Mr. Gore as a master propaganda artist and not a great caring citizen.
